LESS WATER THAN CONVENTIONAL COTTON
To produce one conventional cotton T-Shirt we would need 2700 liters of water. This would be enough water for an average person during 2.5 years. In contrast, a T-Shirt made with organic cotton requires less than 243 liters of water. Organic cotton is also more enduring in drought conditions than regular cotton thus making it more appropriate for growth in dry conditions.
%
LESS ENERGY
Organic cotton farming has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than conventional cotton. During the process of farming and production it employs techniques that emit over 46% less carbon dioxide in the process. This method, with less water and zero chemical requirements, uses 62% less energy than conventional cotton cultivation.
Workers in the organic cotton industry
Organic cotton respects workers in the production process
Farmers that cultivate organic cotton are paid more than workers in the conventional cotton industry. By buying garments made with organic cotton, you are ensuring that the workers in the production process are paid a living wage and are fairly compensated for their work.
Workers are not exposed to chemical substances like pesticides or dangerous chemicals, so their health is no longer compromised. There have been several cases of mishandled fertilizers and chemical substances which leads to injuries, compromised body damage, or even fatality among farmers and workers in the conventional cotton industry especially in poor and developing countries. Organically grown cotton avoids such threats.
Sustainability
Producing organic cotton is environmentally friendly
If you love the natural world and seek to save the beauty of Planet Earth's fauna and flora, embrace organic cotton. Its production results from an agriculture and environmental friendly method, thus minimizing its impact in the environment. It goes through a chemical free production process, and also prevents water contamination. Instead of harmful pesticides and toxics, organic cotton farmers use cover crops like clover to manage soil nutrition, improve soil health, and help control pests.
Organic soils also tend to be healthier. This can lead to climate change mitigation and boost the capacity to adapt to extreme climate events such as droughts and floods.
Growing cotton organically also reduces water consumption. It can be grown using 91% less water than its non-organic counterpart. 80% of organic cotton crops are rainfed, not irrigated, so farmers are able to grow this crops without heavily relying on local water resources.
